Glossary of terms
A concise glossary of terms to explain what terms used within Spa Health mean.
Digestive System
The process called digestion allows your body to get the nutrients and energy it needs from the food you eat. The digestive system is a complex tube-like series of organs and glands that breaks the food down into small molecules that the body can process. It also excretes waste.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) affects 15% to 20% of adults. Symptoms of IBS include diarrhea, constipation, alternating bouts of each, as well as abdominal cramps, gas and bloating. Though the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome are very real, medical tests often show no abnormalities. Peppermint oil and Acidophilus may help with the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
Free Radicals
Free radicals are unstable molecules that react with stable molecules and turn them into free radicals in the process. This can start a chain reaction which might result in the disruption of living cells. Usually free radicals arise during metabolism. Sometimes the immune system creates free radicals on purpose to neutralize bacteria and viruses. Environmental factors such as radiation, pollution, cigarette smoke and herbicides can also spawn free radicals. Free radical damage within cells has been linked to a range of disorders including atherosclerosis, arthritis, cancer, Alzheimer's and diabetes. Antioxidants are believed to help protect the body from damage by free radicals.
