Free Radicals
Free radicals are unstable molecules that react with stable molecules and turn them into free radicals in the process. This can start a chain reaction which might result in the disruption of living cells. Usually free radicals arise during metabolism. Sometimes the immune system creates free radicals on purpose to neutralize bacteria and viruses. Environmental factors such as radiation, pollution, cigarette smoke and herbicides can also spawn free radicals. Free radical damage within cells has been linked to a range of disorders including atherosclerosis, arthritis, cancer, Alzheimer's and diabetes. Antioxidants are believed to help protect the body from damage by free radicals.
